Michael Shermer Tests the Polygraph and Lie Detection Part 1
May 31, 2009 | Author: admin | Category: forex trading systems
Can the polygraph machine really scientifically measure if someone is lying, or are all those graphs and numbers just pseudoscience in the service of law enforcement? Can we tell if someone is lying to us by their body language or facial expressions? Michael Shermer puts both the polygraph and lie detection to the test in this dramatic episode that features O.J.’s jury consultant lie detection expert.

Good points.
G. Gordon Liddy is adamantly against the use of polygraph tests (as am I). About 10 years ago, when he still had his radio show in Washington, he interviewed a physician who trained people how to decieve the machine and the polygrapher. Nearly every person he trained in countermeasures during a 30 minute session fooled the polygraph test. On a related note, certain drugs such as beta-blockers and benzodiazepines can sufficiently relax a person into totally fooling the test.

Retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent Dr. Drew C. Richardson studied polygraphy for the federal government. Speaking to the senate, he said, “[Polygraph screening] is completely without any theoretical foundation and has absolutely no validity… the diagnostic
value of this type of testing is no more than that of astrology or tea-leaf reading. …(A)nyone can be taught to beat this type of polygraph exam in a few minutes.”
It’s time we start listening to the truth.

The polygraph …
The polygraph machine itself is not a lie detector. It simply measures physiological responses. It is the interpretation of the data that detects ‘troubled area’, not lies. Finally, the interpreter, or examiner, must be good at what they do. When the results show a ‘troubled area’, the subject is then further questioned about that area WITHOUT being connected to the polygraph. It is here that the examination typically gets subjects to confess. It is not valid if the subject does not confess.

Listen to the …
Listen to the psychologist in the video. “…the fact is that there is no reliable way to tell if someone is telling the truth or not.”
I don’t think there will ever be a way.
We need to start listening to the real scientists and subject matter experts instead of frauds protecting their own interests.
“People who offer hi-tech solutions and all kinds of fancy gizmos that promise a way to give you the answer – that ’s a very appealing promise to be able to make. But they’re dead wrong.”

Correct. The EEG ” …
Correct. The EEG “lie detector” isn’t accurate either. All Grant did was accept the fact that he was going to “fail,” and he ended up “passing.” All “lie detectors” are based on the premise that everyone stresses out when they lie. If you are comfortable with lying, or you stress out for some reason during these “tests” when telling the truth, they will either fail to catch you actually lying, or will identify you as a liar when in fact you aren’t.

Grant, the asian guy from Mythbusters, fooled and EEG lie detector by thinking of very negative thoughts during the control questions, then very pleasant ones during the relevant questions, so his lies didn’t stick out much from the control.

The most …
The most polygraphers can do is claim they notice you are using them and hope you spill the beans. Don’t buy the bait. That also goes for their spiel, “You are having a little trouble with this question. Go ahead and tell me what the truth is. the machine senses something.” It’s just a BS interrogation technique. Hold your ground!

Polygraphers state …
Polygraphers state that, but, if countermeasures are done correctly, they cannot detect them. The only countermeasure they can detect is the anal pucker , and that’s only if they have a sensor in your seat. Dr. Richardson has issued a challenge to polygraphers that they will not be able to accurately detect countermeasures. This was done in a public forum, in front of federal polygraphers, eight years ago. His challenge goes unanswered.

“Polygraphers have been trained to detect countermeasures” What a load of . So if you go into a polygraph knowing to control yourself during questioning, they’ll spot you and you’ll fail based on that. And if you let yourself react naturally you have a good chance of failing also? ed if you do, ed if you don’t.

So who are we going to believe? Psychologists who use science to study human behavior, or polygraphers who attend 10 week polygraphy schools?
The American Psychological ociation says that, “There is no evidence that any pattern of physiological reactions is unique to deception.”
